Three Panthers Place at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. – David BoninRyan Loder and Christian Brantley all found a spot on the medal stand at the prestigious 48th Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern UniversityThursday evening. Loder (184 lbs.) finished fifth while Bonin (157 lbs.) finished sixth and Brantley (hwt.) finished seventh.

This marks the second top-eight finish for Brantley during his tenure in the Purple and Gold while Bonin and Loder earned their first medals.

In the team standings, UNI placed 15th with 45 points, its highest finish since the 2008 season.Missouri was the top team, finishing with 103.5 points

Bonin opened the day with a 2-0 decision over Sean McMurray at 157 pounds. Bonin followed that with a 10-2 major decision over Pitt’s Donnie Tasser before No. 4-seeded James Fleming (Clarion) handed Bonin a 13-1 loss. In the fifth place match, Bonin fell 9-4 to Rutger’s Daryl Cocozzo to take sixth place overall.

Loder started day two with an upset over No. 5-seeded Dan Rinaldi (Rutgers) earning a 6-4 decision at 184 pounds. Loder then topped Lehigh’s Kadeem Samuels 7-2 to advance and face No. 2 Robert Hamlin for the second time in two days. Hamlin topped Loder again, scoring a 5-3 decision. In the fifth-place match, Loder met No. 1 seed Grant Gambrall (Iowa) for the second time this season, revenging an earlier season dual loss with a pin in 6:59 to finish fifth.

Brantley scored a 10-5 decision over Missouri’s Tyler Perry before Wartburg’s John Helgerson earned a 3-1 decision to push Brantley into the seventh-place match. Brantley earned his highest finish of his career, taking seventh place with a 6-4 decision over Northwestern’s Michael McMullan. Brantley placed eighth at the Midlands Championships during the 2008-09 season.

UNI returns to action next weekend (Jan. 8-9) hosting the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals in the UNI-Dome.
