Panthers Upset Bid Over No. 15 Iowa State Falls Short

AMES, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa’s upset bid over Iowa State Friday night in Hilton Coliseum fell just short as the Cyclones picked up a 3-2 decision at the heavyweight slot to earn the 21-20 dual win.

The Panthers picked up wins from Caleb Flores (125 lbs.), Ryan Jauch (141 lbs.), Joey Lazor (141 lbs.), David Bonin (157 lbs.) and Ryan Loder (184 lbs.). Bonin and Loder earned bonus team points for the Panthers, both winning by major decisions.

The Panthers opened the dual with a 9-3 win from Flores over Brandon Jones at 125 pounds. Flores notched two takedowns and added a three-point nearfall while accumulating over two minutes of riding time in the win.

At 133 pounds, Jauch picked up his second win over Cash this season, scoring an 8-3 decision. Jauch scored three takedowns in the match as well as an escape and added riding time in the win.

UNI picked up six points at 141 pounds off a Cyclone forfeit, going up 12-0 after three matches.

At 149 pounds, Max Mayfield escaped with a 4-2 win over Brett Robbins. Robbins scored a takedown in the third period to knot the score at 2-2, but Mayfield had riding time and picked up a point for unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of the match.

UNI rebounded and took a 16-3 lead, picking up a major decision win from Bonin at 157 pounds. The reigning Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week scored an 11-2 win over ISU’s Trent Weatherman.

ISU went on to win at 165 and 174 pounds, picking up an injury default at 165 and a technical fall at 174 pounds to pull the score within 16-14.

At 184 pounds, No. 9-ranked Loder extended his winning streak to nine with an 11-2 major decision over Cole Shafer, giving UNI the 20-14 lead with two matches remaining.

Iowa State picked up a major decision win at 197 to pull the team score to 20-18 with the heavyweight match left.

Wrestling the first dual meet of his career, sophomore Blayne Beale fell 3-2 to Kyle Simonson in the heavyweight match. Simonson scored a reversal, but Beale recorded two escapes to knot the score at 2-2. However, Simonson had accumulated over a minute of riding time to earn the 3-2 victory and give Iowa State the 21-20 dual victory.

UNI (8-9, 2-0 WWC) returns to action next weekend, heading to Greeley, Colo. to face Northern Colorado and Cal State Bakersfield.
