Panthers return to Harold Nichols…..

Panther wrestling will head to Ames, Iowa, Sun., Nov. 13 for the Harold Nichols Open. Wrestling will commence at 9 a.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

PREVIOUS PERFORMANCE AT HAROLD NICHOLS
The last time UNI Wrestling competed at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open was Nov. 15, 2008. Eight Panthers competed at the event, including three members of UNI’s current roster: Cruse Aarhus, David Bonin and Blayne Beale. Bonin (165) placed fifth in his weight class as a freshman.

RETURNING TWO NCAA QUALIFIERS
Two NCAA Championship qualifiers return to the Panther lineup this season. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Loder (184) was one win away from achieving All-American status. Meanwhile, junior David Bonin (157) bowed out in the third round of consolation matches.

FIVE CHAMPIONS EMERGE AT LORAS OPEN
UNI wrestling boasted five individual championships and one runner-up finish at the Loras Open Nov. 5. Champions include freshmen Adam Perrin (141), Jarrett Jensen (157), Blaize Cabell (197) and Cody Krumwiede (285). Kyle Lux and Taylor Berger shared the 165-pound title. Freshman Tanner Hiatt (149) took home runner-up honors.

PROMISING PANTHER RECRUITS
This year’s Panther squad will feature many new faces. Of the 28 wrestlers on the preseason roster, 15 are true freshmen or first-year transfers. Notable recruits include JuCo National Champion Joe Colon (133), who trans- ferred from Iowa Central, as well as Iowa’s 2011 “Mr. Wrestler” and Waverly native, Cody Caldwell (174).

A YEAR UNDER HIS BELT
Doug Schwab enters his second season as head coach. In his debut season, Schwab led UNI Wrestling to its first 12-win season since 2003. He held assistant coach positions at Iowa and Virginia Tech before joining the Panthers. During his own college wrestling days, Schwab was a three-time All-American and Big Ten champion at Iowa. He won the 1999 NCAA Title at 141 pounds.
