Panther Wrestling Tops South Dakota State, 38-9

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team picked up a 38-9 win overSouth Dakota State Saturday evening in Brookings, S.D. With the win, UNI moves to 7-7 this season and a perfect 2-0 in Western Wrestling Conference action.

UNI won eight of the ten matches, with four Panthers picking up bonus points. Joey LazorBrett RobbinsBrice Wolf and Ryan Loder scored extra team points for UNI in the dual.

UNI never trailed in the match as SDSU forfeited at the opening two weights. Lazor then gave UNI an 18-0 lead with a pin over SDSU’s Tyler Johnson at 141 pounds.

Robbins picked up a major decision win at 149 pounds followed by a decision win at 157 pounds by David Bonin, giving the Panthers a 25-0 lead with five matches remaining.

SDSU picked up its first win of the dual at 165 pounds but UNI responded with consecutive technical falls from Brice Wolf (174 lbs.) and Ryan Loder (184 lbs.).

UNI gave SDSU six points with a forfeit at 197 pounds before Christian Brantley wrapped up the dual with a 4-1 decision over Kevin Kelly.

UNI (7-7, 2-0 WWC) returns to Cedar Falls next weekend hosting Nebraska Sunday, Jan. 23. Action from the West Gym is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
